Racine’s First Class of Road Builders

“As economic development projects surge, the need for new roads is also expanding, and workers are needed to build those roads.

Recognizing the shortage of workers, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, in a collaborative partnership with the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership and Gateway Technical College’s engineering unit, just completed the first of a series of intensive, three-week road-building certificate programs.”

About Us

In 2018 WRTP/BIG STEP expanded its services to provide training opportunities for careers in construction and manufacturing in the greater south eastern Wisconsin area. Committed to helping recruit, prepare, and funnel a diverse population of workers into family-sustaining careers throughout Wisconsin, WRTP/BIG STEP leverages its strong community and industry partnerships to address some of Racine’s most serious challenges.

By utilizing a partnership with Gateway Technical College, WRTP/BIG STEP will be able to strengthen pathways for both youth and adults to careers in construction and manufacturing, provide community outreach in the form of career exploration and assessments, and promote a multi-generational approach to addressing poverty and inequality at the neighborhood level.

WRTP/BIG STEP Southeast Steering Committee
To help recruit, develop, and retain a more diverse, qualified workforce in the Racine area, WRTP/BIG STEP has formed a steering committee made up of industry and community leaders in Racine County.
